Trip to Barbados
In 1751, Washington took a trip with his brother to Barbados. The trip was the only trip Washington took out of the country in his lifetime. Washington’s brother had fell ill with tuberculosis. This caused Washington to go with his ill brother to Barbados to help heal his sickness. -
Commander of British Province of Virginia Militia
George Washington made Commander of British Province of Virginia Militia. Washington’s beginning military experience was in the French and Indian war. Later on, washington was put in charge of all of the Virginia Militia forces. -
Washington Marries Martha
In 1759, Washington married a woman named Martha Dandridge. Martha was a wealthy widow with a lot of slaves and farmland. Because of Martha’s wealth, she wanted a love relationship, not one for money. -
Washington commanding cont. army
In 1775, Congress ordered Washington to take command of the continental army. George Washington lost more battles than won. Despite the losses, Washington had a winning strategy that showed he was right for the job. -
Surrender at Yorktown
In 1781 Washington, with the help of French Naval Forces, Washington and his troops surrounded british troops. The british had surrendered under general Cornwallis. Following the surrender was agreements, and treaties officially declaring America independent from Britain, and ending the war. -
Constitutional Convention
In 1787 Washington was made head of the Constitutional Convention. Washington was also the first to sign the constitution. Of the 41 delegates, 38 signed. The Constitution was ratified with the necessary 9 out of the 13 states needed. -
First President
In 1789, Washington was elected as the first president of the United States. Washington knew that because he was the first president, whatever he did in office would set a precedent for all future presidents. George Washington was the only president ever to be unanimously elected. This means that no one voted against him. -
National Bank
Alexander Hamilton, Secretary of Treasury at the time, wanted to establish a national bank for a few reasons. He wanted to establish credit for America, making other countries want to deal with America. Hamilton also wanted to pay off war debts, and raise money for the government. These reasons helped to convince Washington to sign the bank bill into law. -
Retirement
In 1797 Washington retires to go live on his plantation in Mount Vernon, Virginia. George worked hard to get his plantation as good as can be. It was at there in Virginia where he would die from a cold. -
