    Battle at ManassasThe battle at mannassas was the first battle of bullrun. It happened in prince william county, VA. Each side had about 18000 not very well trained soldiers. The fight went on for nearly a day. In the end the union soldiers lost and retreated back to washington.

    George is now in the camp of the fifth regiment, otherwise known as camp alexandrea. It is in Virginia and it is a very large camp. The battle at manassas just happened and he survived so he writes about it in his letter talking about the death toll, number of people captured, and the number of people wounded.

    Lice were a very big problem when they got into big camps because they spread very quickly.

    In George's letter he talks about them going down the river to take a masked battery to the rebels, that means a surprise attack on the enemies. This kind of attack was pretty common after the civil war because they realized that standing in big lines was uneffectave. George dosen't talk about the death toll but it was probably not high because google didnt have it ethier.

    Soldiers Holidays in Civil WarGeorge spent his thanksgiving building a log cabin for himself to live in during the winter. His letter says that he ate dry bread and hoarse for his thanksgiving meal. In this time soldiers very rarely got to go home and see their family so probably most soldiers were doing similar things.

    Fairfax CourthouseThe battle of Fairfax courthouse was the first big battle of the civil war. This happened when a group of calvery accidentally clashed with the Fairfax militia and there was one confederate soldier killed. a similar event occored erlier in the year but no one was killed.

He thinks he will be coming home soon because of his sickness and is looking forward to seeing his family and friends.
