Battle at ManassasThe battle at mannassas was the first battle of bullrun. It happened in prince william county, VA. Each side had about 18000 not very well trained soldiers. The fight went on for nearly a day. In the end the union soldiers lost and retreated back to washington. -

Generall Mcdowall ordered his men to go fight the armed batteries and they lost lots of men on both sides, ecspecially the union. They had to march out infront of the enimies that were armed. George never says exactly how many people were killed but we can assume it was a good number because he says they were ordered to march infront of the

George is now in the camp of the fifth regiment, otherwise known as camp alexandrea. It is in Virginia and it is a very large camp. The battle at manassas just happened and he survived so he writes about it in his letter talking about the death toll, number of people captured, and the number of people wounded.

Pleuricy Fever
Pleuricy informationGeorge is sick with pleuricy fever but George personally thinks its just a cold. He talks about 3 new york regiments that joined them and how they broght lice to the camp.
Lice were a very big problem when they got into big camps because they spread very quickly. -

George says that he has lice and constantly picks them off of him. George thinks the men from New york brought them to the camp. Lice were a very big problem in camps like this because thet spread very quickly and were hard to get rid of.

Masked Battery
In George's letter he talks about them going down the river to take a masked battery to the rebels, that means a surprise attack on the enemies. This kind of attack was pretty common after the civil war because they realized that standing in big lines was uneffectave. George dosen't talk about the death toll but it was probably not high because google didnt have it ethier.

Thanksgiving
Soldiers Holidays in Civil WarGeorge spent his thanksgiving building a log cabin for himself to live in during the winter. His letter says that he ate dry bread and hoarse for his thanksgiving meal. In this time soldiers very rarely got to go home and see their family so probably most soldiers were doing similar things.

Fairfax CourthouseThe battle of Fairfax courthouse was the first big battle of the civil war. This happened when a group of calvery accidentally clashed with the Fairfax militia and there was one confederate soldier killed. a similar event occored erlier in the year but no one was killed. -
Arriving at Camp Vernon
Camp vernonGeorge talks about life at his new camp called Camp Vernon, spoecifically he talks about some calvery men that wandered off and ended up near fairfax, a rebel camp! they ended up starting a small battle and 1 rebel was killed. This battle was part of Bullrun. -
End of stay near fairfax
Fairfax in civil warGeorges stay near fairfax was short lasting, their stay ended with a battle that started a whole lot of other battles. George had been near Fairfax for a while. George was sick so he was not part of this battle. -

BullrunIn George's letter to his brother who is also in the war he says they were firing all night and he couldnt sleep. he also says he thinks some ships tried to break the rebals blockade. Bullrun was several battles but they were sort of the start of the civil war. -
Sickness
Sicknesses in civil warGeorge has been sick for over 4 months. Originally the doctors thought it was Pleuricy fever but now they dont know because whatever it was relapsed and he is sick again. He thinks he will be coming home soon because of his sickness and is looking forward to seeing his family and friends.
