America began to see alcohol as a harmful substance and with hopes of reform officially banned alcohol in the U.S. with the 18th amendment. Fitzgerald had left Princeton to join the army where he was sent to Montgomery, Alabama. He met Zelda Sayre when she was 18 and a year later they got engaged. Zelda then ended things but the couple reunited when he was discharged and later got married on April 3, 1920.
