    Christopher Columbus Arrives in America
    Columbus was looking to sail to Asia but ended up landing on the Bahama Islands of America. Although many credit him with the discovery he was just the one who claimed America for Spain and basically made America popular.
  • Declaration of Independence

    On July 4, 1776 the Second Continental Congress finished the Declaration of Independence. It declared America's independence from Britain.

    Louisiana Purchase
    The United States purchases the Louisiana territory for a very low price of $15 million giving them control of the crucial Mississippi river and doubling the nations size.

    California Gold Rush

    On January 24, 1848 James Marshall found flakes of gold in the American River at the base of the Sierra Nevada mountains while building a water powered sawmill. This ended up attracting over 300,000 people to the state and around 80,000 in the first year. Over the course of the gold rush miners extracted more than 750,000 pounds of gold. At the peak of the gold rush in 1852 around $81 million of gold was extracted from the ground.

    Civil War

    A war fought between the United States of America and The Confederate States of America. As a president Lincoln's main goal was to preserve the Union however due to the controversy over slavery from 1860 to 1861 eleven southern states seceded from and formed their own country. This led to the start of the Civil War at Fort Sumter where Confederate forces bombarded Union fort. Overall, the war resulted in around 620,000 casualties.

    In 1863 in Pennsylvania Union forces stopped the Confederates from invading the North. This was a huge victory for the North and a turning point in the war.

    It was held in Washington DC with over 200,000 participants for jobs and freedom. It was successful in pressuring the JFK administration to initiate a strong civil rights bill in congress.

    Time period after the civil war where the United States attempted to rebuild the South's infrastructure that had been destroyed in the war. It was also a time where attempts where made to address the inequities of slavery and to come up with a solution to the problem of the readmission for Confederate States to the Union.

    On April 9th 1865 Confederate General Robert Lee Finally surrenders at the Appomattox Court House.

    Confederate General Robert E Lee surrenders his army of Northern Virginia to Ulysses S Grant. The Civil war was finally over.

    While Lincoln was watching a play at Ford's theater he was shot in the head by well known stage actor and loyal confederate John Wilkes Booth. After a night of agony Lincoln was finally pronounced dead at 7:22 am on April 15, 1865.

    On May 10 1869 the golden spike was driven into the railroad successfully connecting the West to the rest of the United States through a railroad spanning across all of the United States.

    World war 2 ended up being the deadliest war ever. Their were about 35 to 60 million causalities during the war. The US didn't wan't to risk a land invasion on Japan so in early August we dropped two nuclear bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. On September 2 of 1945 we accepted Japan's surrender.
