When Gandhi is in South Africa he was given a first class ticket on a train and he was kicked out because he was Indian. Then he realized he had to figh for discrimination.

Millions of Indians enlisted in the British army and they promised that when they come back eventually the British would lead to self-government. When they return they expect Britain to fulfill its promise but once again the Indians go back to second class.

The British Government passes the Rowlatt Act which gives authority and power to arrest people and keep them in prisons without any trial if they are suspected with the charge of terrorism. The Indian National Congress starts the Hartal Movement where thousands of Indians stop working and stop selling and buying British products in protest. Unfortunately, violent riots occured in Amritsar, 379 Indians are killed and 1,000 are injured.

Gandhi gets people to stop using British products and encourages people to start making their own clothes rather than buying British clothing.

The British retaliate by passing the Salt Act which makes it illegal for Indians to make their own salt, punishable by at least three years in jail. On March 12th, Gandhi travels 320 km on foot for 24 days to Dandi to make his own salt. Others follow. Gandhi is again taken to prison.

The British parliament passed the government of India's act. India is now negotiating with the British if Indians should self rule.

The 73 year old Gandhi starts a hunger strike that lasts 21 days in order for his followers to stop comitting violent acts.

Tensions between Hindu and Muslim rise into violence. India is divided into Pakistan and India. The people start to get frustrated and riots start all around India.

Gandhi fasted for three days to stop communal violence in Calcutta

Attempting to promote peace and asking that homes be restored to Muslims, payment to Pakistan be made and fighting cease, Gandhi starts another fast. Five days into the fast, India makes payment to Pakistan and Hindu, Muslim and Sikh community leaders agree to renounce violence and call for peace.

Gandhi is killed by a member of a Hindu organization frustrated by Gandhi’s peacemaking efforts. He was shot on his way to church. His memory and teachings live on in the non violent peace movements.
