It was at University College London that Gandhi's interest in relgion began. It was formerly non-existant. Though he had gone to school to become a Barrister (he later failed), the major outcome his schooling later had was inspiring his beliefs and values he later shared with the world.

After graduating college, Mahatma accepted a job at an Indian firm in South Africa. Facing much racial discrimination, he took up his non-violece movements began, leading a series of protests and resistance movements. Here is where his reputation as a leader began to grow.

Gandhi took on an official political role in the Indian National Congress. During his time, his philosophies grew more. Mahatma assumed leadership of the congress in 1920. Meanwhile, tensions between India and the British were raising because of Congress' push for independance.

On this day, Gandhi and 78 other activists marched a 23 day-long journey to peacefully protest for the independence of India. They stopped at towns and villages along the way to preach. Though it didn't happen right away, this march eventually played a large role in enabling the freedom of India.

Because he demanded independence and opposed the war against Germany, Gandhi and thousands of other congress leaders were imprisoned for the duration of the war until 1947.
