  • Treaty of Paris

    Treaty of Paris
    Britain claimed all land east of the Mississippi River, so the colonist began to settle in the Ohio River Valley, and the Native Americans responded by attacking colonist.
  • Proclamation of 1763

     Proclamation of 1763
    Britain wanted make peace with the Native Americans and told the colonist they couldn’t be protected, so colonists were not allowed to cross the Appalachian Mountains. Colonists were angered because of the British presence and being told what to do.

    Sugar and molasses were now taxed, however not many were affected by this but the idea of taxes was a growing issue.

    This put tax on legal documents, like newspapers and wills, pretty much every piece of paper that was written on. Stamp Act Congress formed to organize boycotts.

    Colonist had to provide food for the British soldiers, the colonist hated this but very little could be done about this.

    Townsend Acts
    Tax on various household items such as paper, glass, lead, silk, and tea, so colonist boycott through the non-importation agreement.

    Customs officers could search at will, few colonists were affected by this, but merchants felt this was invasion of privacy.

    Boston Massacre
    A mob confronted the British soldiers at the Boston Customs House, tension rose and there were shots fired, killing 5 colonist, so Sam Adams used the opportunity to whip up anti-British feeling by calling the event “massacre”, two soldiers were found guilty of killing, six were not found guilty.

    Tea merchants in the colonies were not allowed to trade anymore because the British East India Company decreased their tea prices, so that led to the Boston Tea Party.

    This was when The Sons of Liberty dumped about 90,000 pounds of tea into the Boston Harbor, so this led to the intolerable acts.

    Intolerable Acts
    Colonists were no longer aloud to hold town meetings and the Port of Boston was close, so the first Continental Congress meets, and individual colonist began to unify.

    This is when the Delegates from the 13 colonies met together to ban all trade with Britain until they repealed the Intolerable Acts.

    Britain kept the Tolerable Acts and the Colonist did not like it so everyone thought there was going to be a fight and that is when Patrick Henry gave his famous speech at the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1775.

    Militia had built fortifications so the British attacked, and they were ordered not to fire until they saw the whites of their eyes. The militia were moved of the hill and the British won but with more than 1400 deaths.

    Battle of Lexington and Concord
    700 troops reached Lexington and the British ordered Americans to drop their muskets and they didn’t want to so a riot started and after, 8 Militiamen were dead, so the British marched to Concord and destroyed military supplies so they started a battle. 4000 minute and militia men lined the road from Concord to Lexington and shot at the Redcoats as they headed to Boston.

    This is when they created the Olive Branch Petition was created to declare their loyalty but to ask repeal of the Intolerable Acts.

    Thomas Paine wrote “Common Sense” (Published in 1776) which increased public support for American Independence.
  • Battle of New York

    Battle of New York
    This was when the British wanted to capture New York, so British attacked Washington’s army on Long Island and inflicted heavy casualties. Washington avoided capture and retreated to Pennsylvania. Washington was very humiliated by his loss.

    The Battle of Trenton was when General George Washington and his troops marched on Trenton, New Jersey overnight and captured it the next morning which was in 1776.

    Thomas Jefferson was chosen to compose this document which he wrote based on John Locke’s philosophy- people should have individual rights protected by the government. This was written to break from Britain.

    This was when Washington and his men went to Valley Forge and with freezing conditions, his men were dying of frostbite, disease, and starvation.

    The Battle of Princeton was a battle in which General George Washington's revolutionary forces defeated British forces near Princeton, New Jersey.
  • Battle of Saratoga

    Battle of Saratoga
    This was when British General, Burgoyne planed to cut off New England from the rest of the colonies, but Daniel Morgan had other ideas. So American General Horatio Gates surrounded Burgoyne’s remaining forces at Saratoga New York and Burgoyne surrendered his entire army to the Americans. Saratoga was a turning point because the French and Spain agreed to be allies with the Americans.

    This was when General Cornwallis set up camp in Virginia to wait for reinforcments and Washington found him and while they were there, French sailed up behind Cornwallis, he was now trapped. Finally Cornwallis surrendered and America got their Independence.

    This was when the colonies and the British signed a treaty to end the American Revolution and granted Ameerica statehood.
