Franklins crew left two notes dating from 1847 to 1848 explaining that the expeditions ships got trapped in ice. It said 24 men died, including Franklin, and 105 survivors had decided to walk south to find open water.

They collected the samples from King William Island and made an unexpected discovery. Test samples had revealed a high level of lead.

It took them days to hack through the ice that covered Torrington's coffin. The team began pour bucket after bucket of warm water, warmed on their camp stoves and poured into the coffin. They reached in and lifted Torrington's body from his coffin. Researchers collected labelled samples of organs, bones, hair and nails. Then they returned him to his coffin, with a note explaining who they were and what they have done.
