Plastic became a very reliable source for making food much cheaper and faster to produce. Soldiers heavily relied on this food during battle. These MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) were then given to the public. Citizens loved having meals easily accessed. -
Farmers were able to use chemicals found during WW2.
The use of pesticides such as dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) made food prices much lower and effective for controlling pests. Unfortunately, the usage of pesticides were the responsibilities for air and water pollution. -
DDT was banned due to many safety issues. As a result, many programs were created to help farmers out. The first organic certified program was known as the California Certified Organic Farmers. They were researching many ways to incorporate different foods to peoples' diets. Some of these foods consisted of grains, beans, and vegetables. -
In 1994, the first genetically modified organism or GMO was first appeared in a supermarket. GMO crops started to be used worldwide. Some of these crops included cotton, corn, and even soy. It made farming much easier because it reduced erosion and saved a lot of time. As a result, crops did not die as easily as before. -
All of these changes in the past made our food system today. This helped people stay energized and thrive on our current economy. Consumers are more connected with their meals and sustainable grown foods continue to rise. Additionally, consumers are more interested in the food they eat by asking for more labels and how it impacts their health.
