The Khmer Rouge arrive in Phenom Pehn and everybody is forced to evacuate. Loung Ung and her family leaves their home with only a few of their belongings.

The Ung family ends their walk in Krang Truop.

The family decides to move to Ro Leap in order to get away from anyone who might give away their identity. They are forced to work long hours with very little food.

Loung's older siblings are sent to a teenage labor camp.

Keav, Loung's older sister, dies of food poisoning in a infirmary.

Soldiers come and tell Pa they need his help. Pa never returns.

Loung and her siblings must part and go their own ways. They pretend that they are orphans and get into labor camps in order to protect themselves from the soldiers.

Loung goes back to Ro Leap to check up in Ma and Geak. As she somehow expected, they are not there. She is able to hear from neighbors that they were taken away by the Khmer Rouge soldiers.

With the little money they saved up, they decide to send Loung to America. She waits in Vietnam until she hears of a place she can move to. Loung is free.
