The United States invades Panama to overthrow dictator Manuel Noriega. Who had been trafficking drugs to the US and suppressing democracy in Panama. On December 20, 9,000 US troops joined the 12,000 troops already there. In just 4 days the PDF was crushed and the US held most of the country causing Noriega to surrender in 1990. -
Lyle and Erik Menendez shoot their parents, Kitty and Jose, to death in the family's Beverly Hills, home. They dumped their shotgun and went to the local movie theater to buy tickets as an alibi. When they returned home they cried "Somebody killed my parents". They Menendez murders became a national sensation. After they were not suspected, Erik couldn't take the guilt and confessed to his involved leading to a three year legal battle with evidence of Dr. Oziel's tapes. They were found guilty. -
On November 7, 1991, basketball legend Magic Johnson shocks the world by announcing his sudden retirement from the Lakers, after testing positive for HIV. At the time, many people believed HIV was a gay white man's disease. Johnson was neither of those and he was one of the first sports starts to go public about his HIV-positive status. This would make the world see how serious HIV was and to be very careful in the future because anybody can get it and it can be very bad. -
This was a trade pact that was signed to get rid of most tariffs and other trade barriers. They were to get rid of these tariffs on products between the US, Mexico, and Canada. The pact created the a freed trade bloc with the 3 largest countries in North America. It was highly controversial but did bring lots of good to North America. -
In Los Angeles, California, four Los Angeles police officers that had been caught beating an unarmed African American Motorist in a video were acquitted of any wrongdoing in the arrest. This lead to protest and outrage as the LA riots began. Protestors in south-central Los angeles blocked freeway traffic and beat motorists. They also looted numerous downtown store and building, and ste more than 100 fires. -
In Atlanta, Georgia, They XXVI summer Olympiad had been disrupted by the explosion of a pipe bomb in Centennial Olympic Park. This bombing, occurred during a free concert which killed 2 people and injured 100 other. The police where warned in advanced of the bombing, but the bombing exploded before the anonymous caller said it would. This lead a major investigation and the story of Richard Jewell, a security guard who was under investigation and was found innocent. -
Six- year-old JonBenét Ramsey is killed in her Colorado home. Her parents called the police the following morning to report their daughter was missing. Police found a ransom note demanding $118,000, the money would never be necessary, because JonBenét's body was found under a blanket in the basement. With no signs of an intruder, suspicion quickly fell on the parents. The investigation continued for more than two years and the grand jury dismissed with no recommendation for filing charges. -
After an anonymous tip, police enter a mansion in Rancho Santa Fe, California. They discover 39 victims of a mass suicide. All found in matching dark clothes. It was later revealed that the men and women were members of the "Heaven's Gate" religious cult, whose leaders preached suicide and would allow them to leave their body and enter an alien spacecraft hidden behind the Hale Bopp comet. This cult was led by Marshall Applewhite who would recruit people to join his cult. -
On March 24, 1999, Nato sends an air strike against Yugoslavia with the bombing of Serbian Military positions in the Yugoslav province of Kosovo. This was due to the new wave of ethnic cleansing that Serbian forces launched against the Kosovar Albanians days earlier. In October, NATO had already threatened Serbia with air strikes and Milosevic returned tens of thousands of refugees. Fighting still soon resumed between the Serbs and Albanians resulting in NATO having interfere. -
On April 20, 1999, two teenage gunmen set out to kill 13 people at Columbine High School in Colorado. The perpetrators being Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris. Where they would kill 12 fellow students, a teacher, and wounding another 23 people. Shortly after the spree they committed suicide in the school. This crime would prompt a national debate on gun control and school safety, launching a major investigation on the gunmen and their motivation to do this heinous crime.
