    DeGeneres came out as a lesbian on her television show, "Ellen". As a result, her show was cancelled. Ultimately, her “coming out” heralded an era of other gay celebrities following suit.

    He is the first sitting president to do so. This monumental moment enabled members of the LGBT community to feel supported by the leader of their country.
