This Hurricane was one of the first big Hurricanes FEMA has come into contact with. Damages reached over 20 billion dollars, in additon there was also more than 60 people killed. This Hurricane really put FEMA on a national stage. -
James L. Witt nominated as new FEMA director
Bill clinton nominates James L. Witt as new Fema Director. Witt was the first agency director with experience as a state emergency manager. -
Joe M Allbaugh appointed as new director
Joe Allbaugh was appointed FEMA director by President Bush. Not to long after being appointed would Joe Allbaugh have to deal with attacks from september 11. -
9/11
The FEMA agency was being tested in ways it had never imagined. The agency would then coordinate with homeland security and was given responsibility to make sure that the nations first responders were trained and equipped to deal with weapons of mass destruction. -

bush signs into law the post-katrina emergency reform act. It was done so that it could reorganize FEMA. Hurricane Katrina was said to have been the most heart breaking natural disaster in U.S history. -
