National Australasian Convention
Henry Parkes, the premier of NSW convinced the other premiers to speak about federation. The Australasian Federal Convention was held in Melbourne. They met again in Sydney and each colony sent 7 representatives. -
Convention For Federation
There was a conference of people that wanted federation. They were to re-draft the constitution. -
Australian Federal Convention
Australian Federal Convention was held in 1897 and in 1898. Each colony except Queensland elected representatives to go, Queensland didn't want federation. The debated every paragraph and the people that drafted the constitution were Edmund Barton, John Downer and Richard O'conner. -

There was a Referendum were Queensland din't vote and in NSW it didn't get approoved so the premiers met to fix the concerns. -
The Queen Signs the constitution
Five people and one observer, went to London to show the British Parliament the constitution and the queen signed it as a law. And the law said that on the first of January the colonies would unite and become one nation. -
Australia Becomes a Commonwealth
The Commonwealth of Australia was announced on the 1st of January by Lord Hopetoun, the first governer general in Centennial Park Sydney. The first Prime Minister wad Edmund Barton. -
First Parliament House Opens
The First Federal Parliament was established in Melbourne. It was held in the royal exhibition building. -
New Nation Capital
Australia needed a national capital the decided it would be between Sydney and Melbourne. They decided that it would be in NSW but be at least 160 kilometres away from Sydney. Some of the other possible capital names were Albury, Tumut, Cooma, Armidale, Yass-Canberra and Orange. They decided on Yass-Canberra but it was soon changed to Canberra. -
Parliament House Held in Canberra
The first parliament house was made in Canberra. They built another parliament house and that parliament house is now called the old parliament house. -
