    Henry Parkes, the premier of NSW convinced the other premiers to speak about federation. The Australasian Federal Convention was held in Melbourne. They met again in Sydney and each colony sent 7 representatives.

    Australia needed a national capital the decided it would be between Sydney and Melbourne. They decided that it would be in NSW but be at least 160 kilometres away from Sydney. Some of the other possible capital names were Albury, Tumut, Cooma, Armidale, Yass-Canberra and Orange. They decided on Yass-Canberra but it was soon changed to Canberra.
