Infamous immigration tests
After passing the immigration tests and selling their goats, they were ready to leave but in the final days their half sister, Mulu came surprising them. So Mawi's parents refused to leave without her. They begged the immigration officials for one year time and than Mulu was approved to go with them. -

Mouthpiece of America
As they searched for safer things to do they discovered the TV, which they once had seen in Sudanese city of Gedariff, a refugee camp. Now as they turned on the TV in their motel room, they could see the images but could not understand what they spoke. They viewed the TV as real life in America and thought this is what would happen to them.
Mawi's father, who was considered an educated man among their people and could half-speak an Ethiopian/British dialect of English.
