    The original purpose was to protect the US currency from counterfeits. The constitution states the government has the responsibility, “To coin Money, regulate the Value thereof, and of foreign Coin, and fix the Standard of Weights and Measures, to provide for the Punishment of counterfeiting the Securities and current Coin of the United States.” Only after the assassination of William McKinley that the secret services were given the task of protecting the president.

    Congress enacted legislation making the fraudulent use of credit and debit cards a federal violation. The law also authorized the Secret Service to investigate violations relating to credit and debit card fraud, federal-interest computer fraud, and fraudulent identification documents.

Sims (1985), the Supreme Court ruled that information relating to the CIA's MK-ULTRA project could be withheld, as well as suggested that intelligence information of any stripe and from any source--even a public library--could be shielded from public eyes. This related to my topic because it is a case in which the CIA itself is being charged and in the end they decide to keep the information confidential.
