Matthew Rutledge
Matt Rutledge recently finished his medical studies and wants to settle down in Belinda, West Virginia with his wife Ginny. Unfortunately, Ginny passes away from an unusual cancer of some sort. Matt suspects her death was caused from the local mine, Belinda Coal & Coke. He thinks her death was caused by toxic waste the company has dumped somewhere. Matt has had a grudge with the company ever since his father was killed in a mining accident. -
Teague goes insane
Darryl Teague is a worker at BC&C, he’s just been rushed into the ER with severe injuries. Apparently he went crazy after having a shoving fight with another worker and ran over him with a continuous miner, then he ran over a dozen supports. After that the roof caved in. Darryl was examined in the hospital, he seemed to have unusual symptoms. He had developed neurofibromas around his face and other areas, and many of his co-workers said he was becoming crazy and was always very paranoid. -
Matt finds the toxic waste
One day Matt gets a note slipped under his door, it says that there’s toxic waste stored in a cave way out in the mountains. There’s no way Matt knows where that is, so he talks to the Slocumbs, four brothers that live on a farm out by the mountains. After he talks to them one of the brothers, Lewis, said he would take Matt there and show him the toxic waste. They end up getting there and being run off by guards while Matt tries to take a picture. -
Kathy gets killed
Meanwhile, in Boston a woman named Kathy Wilson has developed similar symptoms to Darryl Teague. She too has neurofibromas covering her body. Kathy has ran away from her family and friends, including her best friend Nikki Solari. Kathy ends up getting hit by a truck and killed. Nikki is a pathologist who works in the coroner's office in Boston. Nikki goes to Kathy's funeral, held in Belinda. -
Nikki is chased through the woods
After Kathy’s funeral, Nikki starts to return to Boston only to be stopped along the way by what appears to be an accident on the side of the road. She get out to help the two men but instead one of them try to kidnap her with chloroform. She gets away and runs into the woods. She is chased onto a cliff, one the men’s bullets graze the side of her head and she falls down and is knocked unconscious. She falls off the cliff and into a lake below. Two kids see this happen and call the cops. -
Ellen is threatended
In Washington D.C. another character is introduced. Her name is Ellen and she is against an upcoming vaccine called Omnivax. She plans on voting no in the vote for it to be released. But as she comes home she is greeted by a large man that threatens to kill her daughter if she doesn’t vote yes. She ends up abstaining from the vote all together. -
Slocumb Standoff at the farm
Back in Belinda, Matt goes to check up on the Slocumbs. Since they left they cave they have been very cautious about people coming after them. And thats exactly what happens. A man named Lonnie Tuggle shows up with some friends. The 4 brothers had expected this so they set up for such an occasion. They had all sorts of guns and even explosives like mines. Lonnie saw that he was obviously outmatched and left without a fight. -
Nikki is kidnapped
Matt heads back to the hospital. As he gets there he realizes Nikki is gone. Someone had called in an emergency MRI at a different hospital under Matt’s name. They eventually found the ambulance transporting Nikki. But she was gone and the drivers were both taped to a tree. Matt has a brief conversation with the chief of police Bill Grimes. Matt overhears Grimes talking about one of Nikki’s tattoos, specifically the one on her foot. But there’s no way he could've seen it. -
Matt subdues man
Matt thinks there’s something up with Grimes. So he follows him to a cabin after he gets off work. He looks in the cabin and Nikki, the two men that chased her through the woods, and Grimes were there. Grimes and one of the men leave to get supplies. Matt comes up with a plan to inject a syringe full of ketamine into the back of the man’s head to subdue him. He starts a fire outside to distract him, then stabs him. -
Matt escapes Grimes
Matt hurries before the other men get back. He unties Nikki and sets her on his Harley. But they were too slow Grimes and the other man round the corner as Matt starts his Harley. He speeds away but they are right behind him. There’s a long car chase and they all end up at a lake. Matt notices a tunnel at the other end of the lake, and lucky for him the lake is shallow enough to drive over. He escapes. -
Donelle is born
Back in Washington a baby named Donelle is born. This baby will be the first baby to receive an Omnivax shot. -
Nikki returns home
After Matt and Nikki had escaped Grimes, Nikki wanted to check up on her workplace and boss Joe Keller. When they get there they find that he’s been shot and killed, one of his fingers cut off and taken. All of Kathy Wilson’s medical records stolen. Nikki can’t take it, she goes to her apartment which had also been ransacked. They leave back for Belinda. -
Ellen confronts Vinny and gets kidnapped
Ellen still wants to get revenge on the man that threatened her daughter. She looks through records and finds his name. Vinny Suchter. He lives in Tullis, a town close to Belinda. She drive to Tullis to confront the man. She stabs him in the cheek with a nail and calls the police. Bill Grimes answers and tells her to meet up with him. He then kidnaps Ellen because he is partners with Vinny. -
All stuck in cave
Matt still wants to shut down the mine. So he gets help from an OSHA employee named Fred. Matt, Hal Sawyer (Matt’s uncle), Fred, Nikki, and Vinny all go to the cave together so Fred can get samples from the barrels to shut the mine down. They make it to the waste and the two entrances to the cave explode and cave. Matt gets knocked out and wakes up with 3 injured people, one crazy woman, two dead people, Ellen, and Nikki. Hal and Vinny are no where to be found. -
Matt to the rescue
Matt realizes all these people they found in the cave have the same symptoms that Kathy and Teague had. Nikki and Matt tend to the injured people until they are mostly stable. Oxygen is running out in the cave so Matt decides to swim down a stream in the cave to try and escape. It works and he’s out, he goes to the Slocumb’s farm for help. The four brothers and Matt all drive back out to the cave with explosives to save Nikki and the others. -
Grimes is killed, Matt and Ellen head back to D.C.
They reach the cave and blow a hole in the wall thats covered by rocks. As they try to clear it out more Grimes, Vinny, and another man shows up. Ellen sneaks up above everyone and drops a rock on Vinny, killing him, then a firefight ensues ending with the man and Grimes both dead. Ellen and Matt head to Matt’s uncle’s house to get his Harley to leave for D.C. -
Hal Sawyer reveals the truth
When they get to Hal’s house they see that he’s there and fine, and not dead. Matt knows he was working with Vinny and Grimes then because he didn’t even try to save them. Hal them explains to Matt that the weird symptoms were never from the toxic waste but from an experimental vaccine tested on people living in Belinda. That same vaccine thats in Omnivax, and that’s going to be given to thousands in a matter of hours. -
Ellen and Matt stop Omnivax
After hearing the truth Matt and Ellen race against the clock to get to D.C. to stop thousands from getting a disease from Omnivax. They make it there with barely any time left. They explain to the officials and the first lady of the disease and experimental vaccine. It works and Omnivax is called off. Ellen goes back home. Nikki clears out her apartment in Boston and move to Belinda to live and work with Matt.
