Burn It
After the Pearl Harbor bombing, Papa goes home and burns everything represents him as a Japanese man including the flag. Jeanne remembers feeling horrible because she felt that this was a sign of burning away a part of their family. -
Papa imprisoned
In December of 1941, Jeanne's father, Papa was taken away. He was accused of aiding Japanese ships so he was sent to Fort Lincoln where he would be released 9 months later. -
Deportation of the Wakatsuki family
Jeanne and her family were forced to move to the part of the city where it was secluded for the Japanese. The Wakatsuki had never lived around many Japanese, so it was a bit of a culture shock fir them, especially for Jeanne. -
Hello Manzanar
The family was not sure where they were going at first, but then they began to realize. Their family norms and traditions began to change and soon the Wakatsuki family began to tear apart. -
Papa has Returned
In December of 1942, Papa is reunited with his family, but he is not the same man that left. He comes back a drunken, violent, and man with ruined pride, that brings much more pain to the Wakatsuki family. Jeanne believes that his life ended where she began hers. -
Given a Life
In 1972, Jeanne takes her husband and children to visit Manzanar where she finds a white stone obelisk. The stone marks 12 deaths and then she thinks the life that the war took away, but the life Manzanar gave. -
