The Tariff of 1832 failed in that it was not able to cover the protective barriers of the legislation. South Carolina passed an ordinance of nullification in 1832 in which they threatened to secede if the federal government collected the tariff duties.

William Henry Harrison is inaugurated on March 4th, 1841. He was only in office for a month before dying on April 4th. He was succeeded by John Tyler.

John Tyler became president a month after William Henry Harrison died of pneumonia. Tyler kept Harrison's cabinet until his veto of the bill of fiscal corporation led to all the members except Daniel Webster leaving.

The United States annexed Texas as a state in 1845.
