    • The Funan kingdom is a collection of town-states in the first centuries CE.
    • Oc Eo is an important trading centre on the trade routes between India and China.
    • Large canals join the towns, indicating that the kingdom was technologically advanced and organised.
    • Civil wars in the 6th century destabilise the kingdom.
    • Another kingdom, which the Chinese call Chenla, absorbs Funan.

    Jayavarman II founds the Angkor/Khmer Empire
    • In 790 there are a number of small kingdoms along the Mekong and around the Tonle Sap.
    • These are vassal kingdoms under the control of a Javanese ruler.
    • In 802, Jayavarman II moves his capital to the site near Angkor.
    • He declares independence and himself a universal monarch, or ‘god king’.
    • He establishes the Angkor/Khmer Empire.
