The school was created to help 14-16 year old boys, who had previously dropped out of school, learn trade skills to help in the community.

The school was moved next to the Madison high school and renamed Madison Vocational School. Here it became the rehersal and performane place for Madison Civic Music. The fore runner of Madison Symphony Orchestra

During the great depression the school expanded its technical training programs to aid those who were out of work. This helped the school to survive when others, around the county, were closing there doors. At this time it was renamed once again to Madison Vocational and Adult School.

Thanks to the money provided by "National Defense" courses, during this time frame the schoo was able to keep its door open 24 houts a day.

As Madison grew as a city and more hospitals came to the area Madison College expanded its role in health education.

During the 60s emphasis changed to degree programs and transfering to 4 year institutions.

During the 70s the State of Wisconsin began consolidating the city colleges into the wisconsin technica college system. The school was renamed to Madison Area technical college. The current space of the school was to small and the campus was moved to the Truax location of today. Regional compuses were opened around south central Wisconsin.

Over the last several decades the school has continued to grow and expand. This spring they are completing construction on several new buildings as well as an expansion to the Truax buildind. There has also been another name change. To Madison College, though this is only as a nickname to reduce confusion with Milwaukee Area Technical College.
