Evolution: Darwin's Observations

  • The Beginning

    At 22, Charles Darwin was hired as the naturalist of Captain Robert FitzRoy on a two year voyage. He endured a severe seasickness.
  • Cape Verde

    Darwin's first stop for exploration was Cape Verde, he was so excited about his surroundings that he'd thought to publish a geography book about the countries he visits.
  • Crossing the Equator

    The HMS Beagle finally crossed the equator. Darwin has also been volunteered to be blind folded by the constable and shaved by the captain.
  • Salvador, Brazil

    Here in Salvador Charles Darwin explores the rain forest for the first time. He is very happy about his surroundings because everything is so exciting and new to him. He was so amazed by every aspect of the forest that he couldn't chose what he loved the most about it.
  • Punta Alta, Argentina

    In Argentina, Darwin uncovers many new fossils. What made them different from any fossil he discovered before was that they were giant. From here he made the conclusion that the animals must have been huge.
  • Tierra Del Fuego, Argentina

    At the HMS Beagle's stop in Tierra Del Fuego, Captain Fitzroy returned 3 natives to this area that he kidnapped to take to England on a previous voyage. While there he also attempted and failed to spread Christianity to the village.
  • Falkland Islands

    Darwin was unimpressed by the islands that seemed uninteresting until he discovered fossils of brachiopods inside of some rocks.
  • Rio Negro

    In Rio Negro Charles Darwin explored the pampas. The locals there are called Gauchos. He admired independence of the Gaucho life which involved horses.
  • Chile

    Darwin experienced and watched the eruption of Mount Osorno. Seeing the eruption and the aftermath really impacted him.
  • Galapagos Islands

    The unique animals found in the Galapagos fascinated Darwin. He made many discoveries of things like giant tortoises and iguanas that swim and eat only seaweed.
  • Sydney, Australia

    Darwin found it odd that Australia was full of animals that he never saw in any other location.
  • coco islands

    Darwin was excited to take many samples of coral on this island to further his research on atoll formation.
  • Mauritius

    As he took a walk on the coast of the island, Charles Darwin discovered that beneath the grass and bushes on the ground was black lava.
  • Cape Verde

    Besides all the wagons, Table mountain caught Darwin's attention. The mountain is flat on top like a table and is 3500 ft. tall.
  • Bahia and Pernambuco

    Darwin is thrilled my the creatures he discovered in the jungles but he is eager to get back to England because he is seasick and homesick.
