Events of the Cold War

  • Chinese Revolution

    Chinese Revolution
    Occurred 1946-1950, the conflict was between members of the Communist party of China and the Chinese Nationalist Party. Although the Nationalist party had greater resources they were ultimately defeated by the Communist party because of a lack of morale and rampant corruption. It affected the Cold War in that it furthered the spread of communism through the world and created a new enemy for the United States.
  • Hungary and Czech Revolutions

    Hungary and Czech Revolutions
    The uprisings in Hungary and Czechoslovakia occurred in 1948-1956. The Czech Revolution was a direct result of the Soviet invasion under the Warsaw pact in order to remove Alexander Dubcek from power. Dubcek was very liberal and created many new reforms along with abolishing censorship; the Soviets stepped in and introduced a communist government in Prague. After the invasion they were many wide spread resistances to the occupation. This effected the Cold War in that it was yet another country
  • Hungary and Czech Revolutions II

    Hungary and Czech Revolutions II
    taken over by the communist party and furthering the spread of communism throughout Europe. The Uprisings in Hungary were much the same in that effected the Cold War in the same way however, the uprisings in Hungary were much more violent and caused a wide spread government collapse. Many Soviet officials and members of the communist party were executed. The Hungary Revolutions were basically a coup to overthrow the Soviet (communist) policies.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    Occurred 1950-1953, the conflict was between South Korea and North Korea, and their predominant political parties (i.e. The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, and the Republic of Korea). The war was started due to the forfeiture of Japanese territory at the end of WWII. The country of Korea was politically divided along the 38th parallel with American forces occupying the southern part and Soviet forced occupying the Northern part. The northern part eventually formed a Communist government.
  • Korean War II

    Korean War II
    and the southern half developed their right-wing government. The war officially started when North Korea invaded South Korea on June 25, 1950. North Korea’s attempt to spread communism and the invasion of South Korea affected the Cold war in that it created more communist based tensions in the world.
  • Space Race

    Space Race
    Occurred in 1957-1958 however the space race was concluded in 1969. The conflict was between the USSR and the US, research for space exploration began and soon the US would be surprised by the early launch of Sputnik in ’57. The launch was combated with mass hysteria throughout the US; people feared that it would put US territory in danger. It affected the cold war in that many technological competitions helped to spark the tensions between the US and the USSR.
  • U2 Spy Plane Shot Down

    U2 Spy Plane Shot Down
    Occurred in 1960, the conflict was again between the US and USSR, the US sent a spy plane over Russia and it was shot down. Initially the US denied knowing anything about the plane, however when the Soviets produced wreckage and Francis Gary Powers, the surviving pilot, they could do nothing but admit to sending a surveillance over Soviet territory. This was a real black eye for the US and only served to increase the animosity between the two countries.
  • Berlin Wall Goes Up

    Berlin Wall Goes Up
    Occurred in 1960, the conflict was between West Berlin and East Berlin but was mitigated by the Soviet Union. After WWII there was a massive emigration of people from East Berlin to West Berlin. The transfer of people resulted in a massive brain drain in East Berlin; it was almost to the point of a 20% emigration. Soon the Soviet Union stepped in and erected the Berlin wall that completely separated the two entities. The effected the Cold war in that it was the last major event in the cold war
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    Occurred in 1962, the conflict was between the USSR, the US, and Cuba. In response to the American’s attempt to overthrow the Cuban government and assassinate Castro, the Soviets installed nuclear weaponry in Cuba to deter the US from attacking, in response the US also installed nuclear weaponry in Cuba. The Cuban missile crisis is the closest to nuclear war we have ever been. This event served to tighten the already struggling tensions between the US and USSR.
  • Russia invades Afghanistan

    Russia invades Afghanistan
    This technically occurred during the second Cold War in 1978, the conflict was between the People’s Democratic Party of Afghanistan and those who opposed their communist ideals, the soviet union backed the PDPA while the US funded and provided covert training areas for the rebels. This effected the Cold War in that it was the first major event in the Second Cold War and also furthered the spread of communism.
