    Georgian whites did not want the blacks to vote, so since Georgia was a one-party state, they used the white primary elections as the general election. Blacks were banned from primary elections; they could only vote in the general elections. In 1946 the King v. Chapman case went all the way to the Supreme Court, which decided that the white primary systems were unconstitional

    President Harry S. Truman issued Executive Order 9981 in February. It was issued to have the military put an end to racial discrimination. He signed this because he believed a man fighting for your country is a man fighting for your country, no matter your race, color, religion, or national origin. They believe the same and fight for the same, so why would you segregate them?

He got support from the NAACP that helped get his case to the Supreme Court. It took 3 years for the case to overturn the Plessy v. Ferguson case and be allowed for schools to integrate.

    Mrs. Rosa Parks was arrested for not standing and letting a white bus rider take her seat in montgomery, Alabama. This gave civil right leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., an idea to have all African Americans to boycott the bus systems. This made buses lose money and buisness. The boycott lead to a Supreme Court ruling that said the segregation on buses were unconstitutional in 1956.

    John bell bagan a campain to change the state flag to include their confederate flag inside of it. The senators quickly decided that they wanted this too, so they did change it. Tha amin reason why they did change it was to show that Georgia was going to keep fighting to keep blacks form being as beniffeted as whites.

    In Little Rock, Arkansas, Central Hishschool was segregated in 1957. A group of nine black students were refused to be able to get into the school. These nice students are referred as the "Little Rock Nine", and were chosen to be able to get into Central Highschool. People were refusing to let them in so President Eisenhower gave them all Their personal gaurds. 8 of the 9 graduated hichschool.

    The Temple was bombed with 50 sticks of dynamite that tore through thre side of Atlana's oldest and wealthiest synagogue. This temple was bombed because Rabbi Jacob Rothschild was civil rights leader and a friend of MLK. The confederate underground claimed they bombed the temple and said, "Negros and Jews are hereby declared aliens"

    Most of Georgia's school systems had refused to integrate but Governor Vandiver Jr. had to make he decision between integrateing or not. The sibley commission was created to get the peoples opinion on this. Most people did not want Integration, so they kept keeping their schools mostly integrated.

    With a police escort, Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter enter UGA. UGA Alumni and GA polititions ask governor to not allow them to study there or shut down the school, The govenor lets them go and refuses to stop the desegregation. Both of the Black students become well know and successful.

    The Freedom Riders were civil rights activists who wanted to see if the Supreme Court decisions were really true. This group was sponsered by CORE. The first bus ride they recieved violence and protesting between most of the places they rode through. Even after that they kept on going and they were successful.

    The African American People in Albany try to make the whole county desegregated. MLK cam and helped out but he and more than a thousand people got arested. Their goal wasnt acheived since so many people were in jail.

    After planning protests like boycotting white goods and services in Birmingham, Dr. MLk Jr. and several other protesters were arrested and treated with unfair poliec violence. Rallies and sit-ins were all part of the protesting. Police were mad and did everything they could to make the protestors pay.

    250,000 people marched to the nation's capital protesting for freedom and jobs. It was organized different organizations trying to get their freedom. Many people said speeches, including MLK. Everyone was greatly impressed by the march, because everyone stayed peacful and in an orderly fashen, After the march, civil rights leaders met with the president, and promised to support the civil rights bill.
  • 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham bombed

    This church was used as a meeting-place for some civil rights leaders. The church also becaame involved in a campain to register black people to vote. A man put a box under the church steps. It contained 122 sticks of dynamite. The explosion killed 4 girls and 23 other people were wounded. A man named Robert Chambliss was arrested and charged with murder,
  • John F. Kennedy assassinated

    JFK was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. He was shot while riding a motorcade through Dealey Plaza. Lee Oswald was arrested and accused of murdering him.

    This act made racial discrimination in public places illegal. People had to be treated equaly in theatres, restaurants, hotels, etc. It also made employers have to provide the same oppurtunities. Lyndon B. Johnson signed this act.

    President Johnson introduced this act to congress when the previous act had caused an outbreak of violence against the blacks. This act gave equal rights for all people. Poll taxes and litracy tests were declared unconstitutional. Over 250,000 blacks had registered to vote by the end of 1965.

    A riot was started in Atlanta when a White cop shot a suspected black car theif. People started rioting and got arrested. over 100 people were arrested. One of them was Stokle Carmicheal, who started the riot. He was the leader of the SNCC.

    Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, standing on the balcony of his motel room. He was killed by James Ray, who was fleeing from a house across the street. Riots broke out all over the country. Since MLk was born in Atlanta, it had a much greater reaction. They were nonviolent unlike other states. They respected MLK's wishes. the funeral was also held in Atlanta.

    Itegration of georgia schools had taken many years. It started with the Brown vs. Board of Ed. case. People tried as much as possible to slow this down. Eventually all school were integrated. Violence and protesting did occur but directors of school tried to do it as peacefully as possible.
