    When Lincoln was elected as president many southerners became worried about him abolishing slavery. Tension grew between the north and south.
  • South Carolina Secedes

    South Carolina Secedes
    South Carolina seceeded from the union because of the possible threat of slavery being banned. Many states decided to join them and create the Confederate States of America.
  • Battle at Fort Sumter

    Fort Sumter was the location of the firsrt battle in the Civil War. The confederates told the union to surrender the fort, and attacked when they refused. Eventually the union surrendered due to lack of supplies.
  • First battle of Bull Run

    First battle of Bull Run
    General McDowell lead union troops into northern Virginia in an effort to take the confederate capital, Richmond. General Johnston forces McDowell and his troops to retreat. Lincoln replaces McDowell with McClellan.
  • Battle of Fort Henry and Fort Donelson

    Battle of Fort Henry and Fort Donelson
    General Grant takes two forts which forced confederates out of Kentuckty and most of Tennessee. This gave the union a great advantage.

    Sihloh
    Grant overcomes confederate forces in Tennessee. Both sides faced many losses in this battle. However the union came out successful.
  • New Orleans

    New Orleans
    Farragut took New Orleans for the union in an effort to destroy the souths economy. Some of the battle took place in the ocean with iron clads. The south lost 11 ships in the battle
  • Second Battle of Bull Run

    Second Battle of Bull Run
    General Pope replaced General McClellan during this battle. Union tried to take Manassas but General Lee and Stonewall Jackson held and forced union to retreat. After this battle Lincoln brought back Gen McClellan to replace Pope.
  • Battle of Antietam

    Battle of Antietam
    Gen McClellans troops heavily outnumbered Lees troops in this battle. It was the most bloody battle in US history with over 23,000 casualties. Lee was forced to retreat to Virginia.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Emancipation Proclamation
    In this speech Lincoln set all slaves in the south free. Although they coud not enforce this in the south, slaves would escape the south to the north and join the union and fight.
