THE WAR OF WATERIn February 2000, promoted by the World Bank, the multinational Bechtel signed a contract with Mr. Hugo Banzer, president of Bolivia, to privatize the water supply service in Cochabamba city. The contract was officially awarded to a company called Aguas del Tunari, a business consortium formed by Bechtel.
WAR OF GASThe gas war is the name given to the conflicts that arose in the cities of Bolivia related to the export of natural gas from Bolivia to the United States and Mexico through Chilean ports. The main conflict arises from the government decision of Gonzalo Sánchez de Lozada and Carlos Mesa to export natural gas through Chile. The main demands of the gas war were for the non-export of natural gas until there was a policy to supply and prices were less than one dollar.
