Events Leading Up to the American Revolution

  • The Albany Plan

    The Albany Plan
    A plan to create a unified government for the colonies. It was the first important proposal to conceive of the colonies as one whole, united by one government.
  • The Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act
    An act which imposed a direct tax on the British colonies, requiring that all colonists pay a tax on every piece of printed paper. Colonists believed they should be taxed only by their own legislature, which caused anger among them. The act strained relations with the colonies and was a big push towards their search for independence.
  • The Boston Massacre

    The Boston Massacre
    A confrontation between a "Patriot" mob and British soldiers. British Army soldiers shot and killed several people while taking the harassment of the mob. This led to a campaign to get angered colonists to unite against the British.
  • The Boston Tea Party

    The Boston Tea Party
    A direct protest by the colonists over the British imposed tea tax within the Tea Act. Parliament passed the Coercive Acts in response to this. The Coercive acts would also be known as the Intolerable Acts, the acts which caused outrage that became the major push that led to the American Revolution.

    The Intolerable Acts
    The Intolerable Acts were 5 acts put in place by the British government to restore their authority in the colonies. The acts included the Boston Tea Port Act, Quartering Act, Administration of Justice Act, Massachusetts Government Act, & the Quebec Act. These acts contributed to the Revolutionary War since the colonists felt that legislation violated their Natural Rights and Englishman rights. The outrage caused by colonists became a major push that led to the American Revolution.
  • First Continental Congress

    First Continental Congress
    The first continental congress was a meeting of delegates from twelve of the colonies to organize colonial resistance to Parliament's Coercive Acts. This gathered the colonies to begin resistance to the British.
  • Battles of Lexington & Concord

    Battles of Lexington & Concord
    British soldiers planned to take a patriot military cache held in Concord and Lexington. The British met militia resistance and a battle ensued. The British were pushed back and the first battle of the Revolutionary War had been won by the patriots, showing the colonists' strength to themselves and the British.

    A war between Great Britain and its 13 Colonies who, after the Second Continental Congress declared independence as a new nation called The United States of America, fought for their freedom.
  • Second Continental Congress

    Second Continental Congress
    Convention of delegates of thirteen colonies who discussed an approach of the threat of the British military. Delegates agreed to create a continental army. It managed the Colonial war effort and moved incrementally towards independence. Decided to declare nation's independence.
  • Declaration of Independence

    Declaration of Independence
    By issuing the Declaration of Independence, the 13 colonies explained to foreign nations why they had chosen to separate themselves from Great Britain as well as their goals for their new, independent nation.
