    Abraham Lincoln was elected. The southern states broke away (seceded) from the United State. On March 4, 1861, Lincoln took the office and gave his first inaugural address. He assured the South he didn't intend to abolish slavery, but spoke out against secession. He ended his speech with an appeal to South saying: "We aren't enemies, but friends". What happened next was he made secession illegal.
