The first Catholics to reside in Australia arrived with the First Fleet in 1788. They were mostly Irish convicts, together with a few Royal Marines. -
Fr James Dixon was a prisoner priest in the early Colony of New South Wales and said the first Mass sanctioned by the government. The proclamation was read at Government House, Parramatta, and the first Mass was celebrated in Sydney on 15 May 1803 -
William Johnston led 300 men outside Sydney and let them to the rebellion. As a result of the rebellion Father Dixon(the convict priest) was banned to do more masses. -
Father Terry & a colony arrived to Australia and marked the beginning of official regular Catholic worship. -
Colonial government gave money to any demolition that wanted to run school. The fathers started small and struggling catholic systems in school. -
Catholic school revived some trouble because of a bunch of schemes, they ended up not reviving assistance from the government. -
The opening of Australia's first Catholic church
St John's was opened on 31 December 1837. The first pastor, Fr James Ambrose Cotham OSB, who had accompanied Polding from England in 1835, preached at the Mass. -

29 June 1865 the first St Marys Cathedral in College Street, Sydney was destroyed by fire. All that remained of the original buildings was the Pugin facade and belltower along with part of the north-east transept. -
Bishops and people decided to preserve the catholic system. But, they ran out of money but managed to get money from Ireland.
