    First democracy by the ancient Greeks

    All citizens were supposed to take a role in their cities affairs. The definition of citizen was limited to only males born in Athens.

    Upper class people called patricians took over. They ruled over common people called plebs. The plebs rebelled and won more rights. They helped create a new democratic institution called the senate. Only men could be citizens or civis.

    The American Revolution created the first true democracy. The powers of the government were divided intyo three branches and each branch was restricted so that no one branch could have too much power.
