    Bartolomeau Dias rounded the southern tip of Africa

    Bartolomeau Dias led the first European epedition to sail around Africa's Cape of Good Hope. On a later expidition Dias sailed near South America on his way to Africa, he spotted land at Espírito Santo in Brazil, calling it the "Land of the True Cross."
