    Congress of Vienna

    The Congress of Vienna wasn't a proper congress, but a time when the Great Powers of Austria, Britain, France, Russia, and sometimes Prussia would meet to discuss matters of their countries. Metternich was a representative for France. His goals at the congress were to restore the balance of powers, prevent any further mass rebellions with other countries, and to restore Europes royal families to their original positions.

    The Early Revolutions of the 1820's
    In the 1820's, the Liberal uprisings in Spain were quickly shut down by the conservatives. However, this did not stop any other rebellions from happening. Alexis de Tocqueville, a Liberal French leader, knew the rebellions weren't over and tried to warn everyone.

    Greeks revolted Against the Ottomans
    In 1821, the Greeks revolted against Ottoman forces. The Greeks were overpowered and split up many times by the Ottomans during their rebellion. Alliance countries such as Russia, Britain, and France helped the Greeks force the Ottomans to grant some Greeks independence. In 1830, Greece finally gained it independence.

    Polish Nationalists Defeated
    In Poland, Nationalists had an uprising in 1830 to try and gain independence back for Poland but failed. They hoped they could restore their independence just as they hoped the Congress of Vienna could for them. Polish farmers, students, and officers tried to gain support and revolt again but were crushed by the Russian forces. The survivors of the uprising fled to the United States and Western Europe to keep the idea of freedom alive.

    Louis Napoleon Wins Election
    In December of 1848, Louis Napoleon wins the presidential election in France. He won by presenting himself as someone who cared about social issues, like poverty. Since his name was involved with the Past French glory, this helped him win the election.

    Revolts in the Austrian Empire
    Revolts broke out and started in Vienna. People were unhappy with the way things were with the Austrian politics and revolted for change. The revolts quickly spread around the Austrian Empire, including to Prague. The Austrian government soon came to the conclusion to put a stop to the revolts by sending out their troops. They gained back control of Vienna and Prague.

    The rebellions finally came to a close for the Liberal Revolution in 1850. They did not succeed because they did not have mass support and liberals had different goals that separated their economic beliefs from one another.

    Napoleon III Establishes the Second Empire
    After Napoleon was elected into the office, he named himself emperor and took the title of Napoleon III, leading to the end of the Second Republic. He had his people vote and ninety percent of them voted for him to move up to the Second Empire. During his rule, great prosperity was granted to the bourgeoisie.

    The American Civil War lasted from 1861 - 1865. This war was fought between the Confederacy and the Union. This War was sparked due to the controversy between the right to own slaves. The Confederacy was fighting for the right to own slaves and the Union was fighting for the right of slaves to be free.
