  • The European Coal and Steel Community

    The European Coal and Steel Community, was created by the Treaty of Paris, which was signed on 18 April 1951 and came into force on 23 July 1952.

  • The European Economic Community

    The European Economic Community was created by the Treaty of Rome, which was signed on 25 March 1957.

  • New countries

    United Kingdom, Ireland and Denmark joined the European Communities in 1973.

  • The fall of the Berlin Wall

    The fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989, symbolised the collapse of communism

  • Treaty of Maastricht

  • Euro

    The euro entered into force on 1 January 2002 and was adopted by 19 EU countries, which form the euro area.

  • New countries

    Many countries of Eastern Europe after having freed themselves from the domination of the Soviet Union joined the European Union.

  • The Treaty of Lisbon

    The Treaty of Lisbon was signed in the Portuguese capital, and became law on 1 December 2009.

  • Nobel Peace Prize

    The European Union was recognised for its work in uniting the continent.

  • Brexit

    The UK left the EU on January 31, 2020.
