  • Pats became president

    Pats became president
    Pats became president on April 24th, 1938 and left the office on July 23, 1940. Pats was the most influential politician, and he served five times as the countries head of government. He went onto Switzerland for a few years then to Finland, then came back to Estonia and had to serve time in prison 1910-1911.
  • Soviet Union compels

    Soviet Union compels
    the Soviet Union fell on December 26, 1991. It started to crumble when the united states and the Soviet Union had a fight at the end of WWII. The Soviet was a socialist state that began on December 30th 1932
  • German troops invaded

    German troops invaded
    After Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941, Army Group North reached Estonia in July. Initially, the Germans were perceived by most Estonians as liberators from the USRR. When the Germans invaded Estonia they killed tens and thousands of people.

    Independence proclaimed on February 24th. They declared their independence during the Soviet military coup attempt in Moscow. They lost their independence for a few years and sooner later got their independence back.

    On November 9, 1989, thousands of jubilant Germans brought down the most visible symbol of the division at the heart of Europe—the Berlin Wall. For two generations, the Wall was the physical representation of the Iron Curtain, and East German border guards had to stand shoot-to-kill orders against those who tried to escape. But just as the Wall had come to represent the division of Europe, its fall came to represent the end of the Cold War.

    Estonia initiated the row by deporting two Russian Embassy employees for alleged espionage, which Russia answered in kind. On March 27th Estonias foreign Affairs Ministry gave two Russian diplomats, whose names were not disclosed, and order to leave the country in 48 hours. Foreign Affairs Ministry accused the two of involvement in the collection of classified information about its joining the EU and NATO.

    President Ruutel signs into law a bill scrapping the requirement for candidates for public office to be proficient in the Estonian language. He signed into law a bill in December. After he signed it he got a unique ID number.
  • Estonia joined the EU

    Estonia joined the EU
    The 2003 Estonian European Union membership referendum took place on 14 September 2003 to decide whether Estonia should join the European Union (EU). Just over two-thirds of voters voted Yes and Estonia joined the EU on 1 May 2004. Opinion polls in the first half of 2003 showed only lukewarm support for membership. This persuaded leading politicians including President Arnold Rüütel, Prime Minister Juhan Parts and the Speaker of Parliament Ene Ergma to start campaigning hard for a Yes vote
  • Estonia adopts the Euro

    Estonia adopted the Euro on January 1st, 2011. it did not formally apply when Slovenia did, and officially changed its target date to 1 January 2008, and later, to 1 January 2011. On 12 May 2010, the European Commission announced that Estonia had met all criteria to join the eurozone.

    In February 2014, Estonia and Russia sign a new treaty ending their border dispute. Estonia put up their wall in August 2015. Estonia and Russia said will not be built at lakes or swamps.
