    Shin was born inside of a North Korean labor camp somewhere near 1982. The reason why his family was in the labor camp was because his father's brother had defected from North Korea, therefore his entire family had to be “cleansed”.

    After Shin rats out his mother and brother for their escape attempt, he is the one that originally gets jailed, but then they realize the truth in his words, and punish the correct people, hanging his mother, and shooting his brother.

    When Shin was 17, he attempted to escape, but unfortunately, only 14 days later, he was caught and brutally tortured.

    When shin was 20, he attempted yet another escape, and this time, was way more successful, managing a full 4 months, and getting into China, before eventually getting turned in, and brutally tortured yet again.
  • Shins Third escape attempt

    This time, Shin befriended another slave named Park, and they set out together to attempt to escape. Unfortunately, Park died while trying to get over the electric fence, but Shin continued on, using his body as a buffer between him and the electric fence. This would be the final escape, and he successfully ended up in China, and then eventually South Korea.

    8 years after his escape, Shin gives an amazing testimonial speech at a UN human rights commission, speaking about the atrocities going on inside North Korea, and how they have all of these slave labor camps for political enemies.
