  • Marcel's Decision to Join the Army: Identity vs. Role Confusion

    At age 17, directly after graduating high school, Marcel makes the decision to join the Army. After growing up in a rocky neighborhood, in a house with 8 brothers and 5 sisters, this is Marcel's way of fitting into a society. In Erikson's 5th stage, Identity vs. Role Confusion, one struggles to find their 'place' in society, attempting to discover who they are and what role they want to play in life.
  • Marcel and Susan Marry: Intimacy vs. Isolation

    After being stationed in Germany, Marcel meets Susan, a single mother of two and begins to develop feelings for her. He and Susan make the decision to marry and begin their life together. In Erikson's 6th stage of development, Intimacy vs. Isolation, individuals make more intimate relationships with non-family members. One looks toward long-term relationships; being successful in this stage can rely on a sense of commitment and a happy, healthy relationship.

    Marcel's Military Retirement: Generativity vs. Stagnation

    After retiring from the Army Marcel tries other jobs, from managing a military shooting range to starting a contracting business with a friend. None of these fit his needs, therefore he decides to go to college and get a degree. Marcel then acquires a job at a local non-profit, where he helps homeless veterans find jobs and housing. In Erikson's 7th stage, Generativity vs. Stagnation, an individual wants to contribute to society and create a positive change in their life or the lives or others.
