Jimmy is Born: Trust vs Mistrust
Jimmy is born and needs to have all of his needs met by his care givers in order to feel safe as he is not able to take care of himself. In Erikson's fist stage, the crisis faced is that of trust vs mistrust, and if the care giver is able to meet the needs of a young child they will learn to trust but if the care giver won't or cannot meet those needs the child will not learn to trust. -
Jimmy Gets Married: Intimacy vs Isolation
Jimmy (age 29) decides to get married to get married with Jenny in order to spend the rest of their days with one another. In Erikson's 6th stage the crisis faced is between intimacy and isolation. We either decide to have more intimate relationships with long term commitment or we isolate ourselves and do not commit to any long term relationships. -
Jimmy's Promotion: Generativity vs Stagnation
Jimmy (age 45) works hard to get a promotion in his company in order to have a greater opportunity to contribute to the future success of the company's business. In Erikson's 7th stage the the conflict faced is between generativity and stagnation. In this stage people want to leave a legacy beyond their time, this can be within their family raising their kids or contributing greater to their work. If we don't we generality feel stagnant and maybe even unproductive.
