    Emmeline's birth
    Emmeline Pankhurst was born on 14 July 1858 in Moss Side, Manchester in a very wealthy family. Both of her parents were politically active.

    Foundation of WSPU
    In 1903 she, along with her daughters Sylvia and Christabel, founded the Women's Social and Political Union. They worked really hard with the WSPU in the fight to help women gain the right to vote.

    Beginning of the 1st World War
    When the 1st World War began, Emmeline encouraged the members of WSPU to put their demonstrations on hold and to take up roles of the men fighting. In response, the government released the members imprisoned.

    Representation of the People Act
    When the war ended in 1918, the Representation of the People Act was introduced, giving women over 30 who owned property the right to vote.
  • Emmeline's death

    Emmeline's death
    Although Emmeline lived to see some women gain the right to vote, she died on 14 June 1928, a few weeks before the law giving all women over 21 the right to vote.
