  • The Declaration of Independence

    The Declaration of Independence
    This is the day where the 13 American Colonies declared their Independence from Great Britain. 56 delegates signed this document, trying to make their point to the King.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    On this day, the Louisiana Purchase was approved and the United States received the land for 15 million dollars. Which the orange textbook says, "was about 3 cents per acre". This was important to American History because it doubled the size of the country and gave America control of the Mississippi river.
  • Trail of Tears

    This was part of the "Indian removal act which was a 1830 law that called for the government to negotiate treaties requiring Native Americans to relocate west". This quote is from the orange textbook. Cherokee were forced out of their home land to make room for Americans. They were relocated to a camp in present-day Oklahoma. 1/4 of the Cherokee died during the journey. This is important to America because it relocated many Native American tribes from around the country.
  • California Gold Rush

    This was the date the California Gold Rush began. The Gold Rush was a "migration of thousands of settlers to California in search of gold," according to the orange textbook. This was an important action in the Western movement of Americans.
  • The Attack on Fort Sumter

    The Attack on Fort Sumter
    The contention between the Union and Confederacy had been a problem for a while, but the Civil War didn't start until the attack on Fort Sumter. Fort Sumter was a "federal outpost" in South Carolina, specifically in the Charleston Harbor. When the shot was fired from Fort Johnson, the Civil War had begun.
  • The First Modern Olympics

    The First Modern Olympics
    Today was the opening day for the first-ever modern Olympics. These games were held in Athens, Greece in the year 1869. This day led to a new tradition of sports that continues it's legacy today.
  • The Zimmerman Note is Published

    The Zimmerman Note is Published
    Around this time, the United States uncoded a telegram sent from Germany to Mexico. This letter, known as the Zimmerman Note, stated that Germany would assist Mexico in fighting back for the land they lost to America in the Mexican-American War. One month later, the Americans declared war against Germany. This was the beginning of World War II.

    Today was the day that the stock market crashed in 1929. This is the main event that led to the Great Depression and the collapse of the American Economy.
  • Hitler Becomes Chancellor of Germany

    Hitler Becomes Chancellor of Germany
    Today is the day that Hitler seized all government power and because Supreme Chancellor of Germany. This was an important lead-up event to World War II.
  • United States and Allies Capture Rome

    United States and Allies Capture Rome
    On this day, the United States and their allies in World War II capture Rome. This event helped the Allies move the German forces out of Italy in 1945.
  • Flag Raising on Iwo Jima

    Flag Raising on Iwo Jima
    This was an important day in history for the Americans. Today was the day that 6 brave marines raised a flag on Mount Suribachi during World War II.
  • Brown v Board of Education

    Brown v Board of Education
    Segregation in schools and other public places was ended today. The Supreme Court announced this new law, after a vivacious courtroom battle between 9-year old Linda Brown, and the Board of Education.
  • September 11th

    September 11th
    September 11th was the day of the 4 terrorist attacks in the United States. It is an important memorial day for all who have lost their lives.
