They had 3000 rebelers under the leadership of Darce, and 7000 under the earls. The Duke of Norfolk was executed and The Earls fled. Also 800 rebelers were hanged.

The plotters (ridolfi) hoped they could kill Elizabeth and mary queen of scots as queen. The plotters had some European support from Spain, Brussels and Italy.

Walter Strickland, a puritan MP, wanted to introduce a new prayer book and ban vestments. Elizabeth closed parliament before his opinions could be discussed.

Puritans organized prayer meetings to spread ideas, The archbishop of Cantebury sympathised with these meetings. Elizabthe told him to ban prophesyings. He refused and she had him suspended. Also 200 puritan priests were expelled.

Edmund Campion was behead for treason againts the queen. He was a jesuit and hid his identity untill found and was hung, drawn and quatered.

Throckmorton hoped to assasinate Elizabeth and have Mary Queen of Scots rule. The plot had little suport as it was not well known. It only had few Catholic supporters. Throckmorton was excecuted in 1584.

A puritan William Stubbs wrote a pamhlet critisising Elizabeth for having marridge talks with a Catholic Prince from France. Elizabeth responded by ordering his right hand to be cut off.

Sir Anthony Cope, a puritan MP, introduced a bill to abolish bishops and establish a new prayer book. Elizabeth imprisoned Cope and four of his supporters in the Tower of London.

Some puritans wrote a series of pamphlets complaining about the church and bishops. These were called the Marpretate Tracts. Many people were offended by this and puritans lost a lot of support.
