Military death squads (supported by the government) killed over 30,000 people of Indian heritage or who resembled those of Indian heritage. (This was in response to uprisings against the government.)

Archbishop Oscar Romero was known for speaking out against poverty, social injustice, and torture. He was assassinated by order of the military death squads.

Ronald Raegan was elected the president of the United States.

Elections led to the formation of a provisional government. This was then able to lead to the drafting of a new constitution.

Jose Napolean Duarte is elected the president of El Salvador. He is president until 1989 and is unsuccessful in halting the civil war during his time in office.
