Juan Luis Vives
He voiced to teachers and others with educational responsibilities, such as those in government and commerce, that there should be an orderly presentation of the facts to be learned. He noted that what is to be learned must be practiced. -
COMENIUS
He wrote texts based on a developmental theory including the use of visual aids in instruction. Media and instructional research, a vibrant part of contemporary educational psychology, has its origins in the writing and textbook design of Comenius. -
JOHANN FRIEDRICH HERBART
Considered the father of educational psychology. He believed that learning was influenced by an interest in the subject and the teacher. -
G. STANLEY HALL
Promoter of psychology. Founder of the child-study movement. Hall was APA's organizer and its first president. -
WILLIAM JAMES
Considered the central figure in the establishment of psychology in America. It was a psychology of humility, humor, and tolerance, giving us the notion that consciousness was continuous-a stream-and not easily divisible. -
JOHN DEWEY
His emphasis on progressive education contributed greatly to the use of experimentation rather than an authoritarian approach to knowledge. -
EDWARD LEE THORNDIKE
He believed that only empirical work should guide education and that knowledge was a tool, not an end in itself. -
JOHN B. CARROL
He said that until educational psychology provided evidence that it dealt with the real problems of schooling. One of the most honored educational psychologists, published his model of school learning (Carroll, 1963a), he also wrote about the discipline of educational psychology.
