  • Council of Exceptional Children

This organization advocated for special needs and the inclusion of these students. Special needs became disabilities and gifted-talented students. They are still organizing today and provides support in education.
  • Buck vs. Bell

This court case led to the passing of the law stating that those who were unfit to reproduce would be sterilized. Due to the uproar of the want and need of special education and euginism, people believed that reproduction should be stopped if deemed necessary. Two steps back for the special needs community.
  • Post World War II

After the demonstration of euginism went horribly wrong in Germany (The nazis attempting to eliminate Judaism) America steered away. Medical discoveries were made in favor of people with special needs. New laws were being passed.
  • Architectural Barriers Act

This act provided laws for federally funded buildings to include accessible means for handicap people. This included schools, public housing and public transportation. Still a vital act in the US making buildings more accessible.
  • PARC vs. Pennsylvania

PARC fought for the right of special education in “non-disabled” classroom. The court ruled in favor of PARC and decided that the best place for all students was to be integrated. Children in Pennsylvania were able to then receive the proper education.
  • Mills vs. Board of ED DC

Students were being kept from public schools due to “issues” such as behavior problems, hyperactivity, epilepsy, etc. The US Supreme Court ruled in favor of Mills and determined that public education was equal opportunity. Students with disabilities were then able to attend public school.
  • IDEA

States that all public schools are required to admit children with disabilities. IDEA provides relief to students and families whether that be in the classroom or helping find continued education. It also advocates for students to be enducated in the “Least restrictive environment” possible.
