    On this day a massive earthquake hit Quito and killed around 40,000 people.
  • Spanish rule

    The Spanish ruled over Quito for 300 years but on August 10th they called for independence. August 10th is now celebrated as a national holiday called Independence day.
  • Official Independence

    On October 9,1820 part of Ecuador become independent but it was on May 24 1822 that Ecuador gained full independence after Antonio José de Sucre defeated the Spanish Royalist forces.
  • Liberal revolution

    The Liberal Revolution started on June 5, 1895. The war was over radical social and political disturbance.The revolution almost instantly resulted in the overthrow of the conservative government.
  • Struggle for possession of the Amazon Basin

    Ecuador and Peru both wanted possession of the Amazon Basin. On July 21,1924 both Ecuador and Peru signed the Ponce-Castro Oyanguren Protocol. They would directly negotiate and then allow the United States to aid in resolving any conflicting arguments.
  • Rio protocal

    The terms of the protocol agreed to withdraw the standing claims for the rights to redirect the land access to the Amazon River.
  • Return to democracy

    On this day elections were held under a new constitution and president Jaime Roldós Aguilera was elected. He had a record-breaking 1 million votes.
  • Tourism

    The Ministry of Information and Tourism became a big part of Ecuador on August 10th. The government viewed it as a necessary activity for the growth of their country.
  • Transportation

    Cuenca is the largest train transportation system in Ecuador. On April 8th it was inaugurated.
  • 2019 state of emergency

    A couple days before October 10 protest had started about the end of fuel subsides. On October 10, 2019 protesters overran the capitol Quito causing the government to relocate to Guayaquil.
