Early Civil Rights Timeline

  • Massacre at Mystic

    Massacre at Mystic
    English tried to destroy the pequat indians at the village of Mystic. This shows the indians that pease with the white settlers was impossible.
  • The Scalp Act

    The Scalp Act
    This act legalized the taking of indian scalps for money. This act was meant to destroy the Delaware Indian tribe.
  • Slave trade ends in the U.S.

    Slave trade ends in the U.S.
    The U.S. Congress passed an act to “prohibit the importation of slaves into any port or place within the jurisdiction of the United States…from any foreign kingdom, place, or country.”
  • Battle of Tippecanoe

    A battle near present-day Lafayette, Indiana between U.S. forces lead by Governor William Henry Harrison and Native American warriors with the Shawnee leader Tecumseh. It was a significant defeat for Tecumseh's American Indian Confederation.
  • Indian Removal Act

    This authorized the president's negotiations with southern Indian tribes for their removal to federal territory west of the Mississippi River in exchange for their ancestral homelands. This was important because southern indians who wanted to conform to American culture could live where those indians where being removed from.
  • Nat Turner Rebellion (need to finish)

    Nat Turner Rebellion (need to finish)
    Nat Turner's Rebellion was a slave rebellion in Southampton, Virginia. This was the highest number of fatalities caused by any slave uprising in the South.
  • Trail of Tears

    Trail of Tears
    Cherokee Indians are forced to move from Georgia to Arkansas by President Andrew Jackson. Thousands of Native Americans died in the forced move.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    Dred Scott's master moved him to a free state and then back to a slave state. Dred Scott sued, saying that since he had lived in a free state he was a free man. The Supreme Court says Dred Scott can't sue, because slaves aren't citizens of the United States.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Emancipation Proclamation
    Presidental act that freed slaves in the rebeling states. Thie was the first step to ending slavery in the United States.
  • 13th Amendment

    13th Amendment
    This is a constantutional amendment that abolished slavery in the United States.
  • 14th Amendment

    14th Amendment
    The 14th Amendment officiaially makes blacks citizens of the United States.
  • 15th Amendment

    15th Amendment
    This amendment gives black men the right to vote.
  • Battle of Little Bighorn

    Battle of Little Bighorn
    The 7th Cavalry and the Sioux, Cheyenne, and Lakota fought in the Indian's final efforts to preserve their way of life. 263 soldiers, lead by Lt. Col. George A. Custer and a few others fought and died.
  • Battle of Wounded Knee

    Battle of Wounded Knee
    This was a massacre that left about 150 indians dead. It was the final conflict between federal troops and the Sioux.
  • Plessy vs. Ferguson

    Plessy vs. Ferguson
    Segregation. It says you could have seperate fasilities for blacks and whites as long as they are equal.
