  • The Conflict Man VS Society

    The Conflict Man VS Society
He speaks a lot about how he dislikes "phonies" and tries to separate himself from them. Every time Holden tries to run away from these "phonies," it starts to give you an idea about how he values honesty and his reaction towards people who don't have this particular value. In chapter seventeen, Holden tries to rationalize himself being kicked out of school by saying he wants to accomplish something different and not just be a phony.

    Deeper thoughts
" I was wondering where the ducks went when the lagoon got all icy and frozen over. I wondered if some guy came in a truck and took them away to a zoo or something. Or if they just fle away."

    Talking with Old Spencer
"Funny thing is, though, I was sort of thinking of something else while I shot the bull. I live in New York, and I was thinking about the lagoon in Central Park, down near Central Park South. I was wondering if it would be frozen over when I get home, and if it was, where did the ducks go." Page 13
  • The Red Hat

    The Red Hat
Once Holden escapes the lecture from Old Spencer, he retreats to his dorm in the Ossenburger Memorial Wing. " I took off my coat and then my tie and unbuttoned my shirt collar, and then I put on this hat that I'd bought in New York that morning. It was this red hunting hat, with one of those very, very long peaks. Page 17

Holden and his hat at the wasbowl
"I was sitting at the washbowl next to where Stradlater was shaving, sort of turning the water on and off. I still had my red hunting hat on, with the peak around the back and all. I really got a bang out of that hat. Page 27
  • Allie's Baseball Mitt

    Allie's Baseball Mitt
The thing was, I couldn't think of a room or a house or anything to describe the way Stradlater said he had to have. I'm not too crazy about describing rooms and houses anyway. So what I did, I wrote about my brother Allie's baseball mitt. It was a very descriptive subject. Page 38: Mortality
  • Lets Brake the Windows

    Lets Brake the Windows
I was only thirteen, and they were going to have me psychoanalyzed and all, because I broke all the windows in the garage. I don't blame them. I really don't. I slept in the garage the night he died, and I broke all the goddam windows with my fist, just for the hell of it. Page 39: Mortality
  • Stradlater's Moron Face

    Stradlater's Moron Face
Holden is pretty upset at Stradlater, and he kept telling him to go wash his moron face, which was a pretty childish thing to say. "I couldn't find my goddam hunting hat anywhere. FInally I found it. It was under the bed. I put it on and turned the old peak around to the back, just the way I liked it. Page 45
  • The talk around Pency

    The talk around Pency
Most guys at Pencey just talked about having sexual intercourse with girls all the time – like Ackley, for instance – but old Stradlater really did it. I was personally acquainted with at least two girls he gave the time to. That's the truth. Page 49

Holden counted up his "dough," packed his bags and stood at the end of the corridor. " I stood for a while next to the stairs and took a last look down the corridoor. I was sort of crying, I put on my red hunting hat, and turned the peak around to the back, just the way I liked it, and then yelled Sleep Tight Morons! Page 52

    In the cab
You know those ducks in that lagoon right near Central Park South? That little lake? By any chance, do you happen to know where they go, the ducks, when it gets all frozen over? Do you happen to know, by any chance?"

He turned around and looked at me like I was a madman. "What're ya tryna do, bud?" he said. "Kid me?"
"No—I was just interested, that's all."
He didn't say anything more, so I didn't either. Until we came out of the park at Ninetieth Street. Then he said, "All right, buddy. Where to?" Page 60: Mortality
  • Back to the Edmont

Holden was out on the town and he decided to walk back to the hotel. He mentions " You wouldn't have even known it had snowed at all. There was hardly any snow on the sidewalks. But it was freezing cold, and I took my red hunting hat out of my pocket and put it on."

  • In the Musuem

    In the Musuem
The best thing, though, in that museum was that everything always stayed right where it was. Nobody'd move. You could go there a hundred thousand times, and that Eskimo would still be just finished catching those two fish, the birds would still be on their way south, the deers would still be drinking out of that water hole. Nobody'd be different:Page 121 Innocence
