    ADEPT Demonstration
In 1989, disabled rights activists brought awareness to the problem of discrimination through a protest in Philadelphia. Slogans like "Access not Excuses" were visible during the American Disabled for Attendant Programs Today (ADAPT) demonstration. This is one example of how the disabled got involved in boycotts, blocking traffic, protest marches, and sit-ins to stand up against unfair treatment of people with disabilities. Americans With Disabilities Act
President George Bush signed the ADA into law on July 26, 1990. This landmark legislation prevented discrimination based on disability, "...a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity." From job applications to public areas, the ADA prohibits discrimination and mandates accommodations for Americans with disabilities.
