This law takes away the right to own guns from Africans. This is the first time that our "diminishing" part of diminishing progress is ever shown. This is also the first time the Africans are dependent on Englishmen to survive. Without a gun they can't hunt for themselves or defend themselves. -
Anthony Johnson acquires land # 1
In this event captain Taylor and Anthony Johnson walk into a corn field and divide up land.Anthony was really pleased. Land ment power and wealth and it was not common back then for a negroe to have land. This is our first event that shows progress in Anthony Johnsons life. His owning of land sets the stage for the rest of the progress he will ever make. -

Land doesn't only mean power and wealth. It also means a higher social status and the ability to grow and expand. This is probably the reason why the English were so greedy for land and money. -
Anthony Johnson wins court case against Englishman # 1
In this court case Anthony Johnson returns to court to try to get his slave back. Anthony Johnson ends up winning the court case against an Englishman. As a result of this court case Anthony Johnson wins a slave. Him as a nergroe winning a court case against an Englishman shows that there still was some fairness in the courts of early Virginia. Anthony Johnson wining the court case also shows was very savvy and new how to work the system. -

Children serve according to mother
Because of this law all slave children will serve according to their mother. For example if the dad was free and the mother was a slave then all her children would be slaves. This law shows diminishing the diminishing part of "diminishing progress" because now more free/slave children will be slaves. Now slavery will become more like a trait/disease that can be passed on. -
Casual killing of slaves law
This law lets Englishmen have free reign over their slaves. If they are whipping their slaves and one gets killed then they can't be punished in court. This law shows "diminshing" because it placed fear in the Africans. Now the English have no checks and balancea and can do whatever they want. This law proves how power hungry they are. -

Anthony Johnson led a long and succesful life even though he was a indentured servent and suffered from racial discriminiation.The English laid down a systematic passage of laws to surpress a people. With each of these laws they waited long enough between them for thier "moral compas" to reset. The laws got harsher and harsher and by the time the Africans knew what was happening they were trapped. Since then America has worked hard to rebuild from it's slavery past.
