    Food has changed in many ways over the years. Food production, storage, and the what people eat has changed.
  • Farming Throughout the 1800s

    Farming Throughout the 1800s

    *Many people grew their own food to feed their families
    *Raised their own animals for food as well as pets
    *Food was stored in a root cellar (a dry and cool environment), and they later began canning food.
  • World War 1

    World War 1

    *Easily transported foods such as bread and meat were sent to soldiers while others were encouraged to eat more fruits and vegetables, due to them being difficult to transport overseas.
    *Food shipments to Europe were doubled in just a year.
    *With food being sent to the soldiers and others changing their diets, food consumption decreased 15 percent between the years of 1918 and 1919.
  • The Great Depression

    The Great Depression

    *People in rural areas continued to produce their own food although people in cities didn't have the money to buy food.
    *People substituted ingredients in food
    *"Wack Cakes" were made with vegetable oil instead of butter while vinegar and baking soda replaced eggs and other dairy products
  • Women Started Working

    Women Started Working

    *Women started working jobs outside of the house and convenience meals were in high demand.
    *There were less home cooked meals and people started eating frozen dishes, such as TV dinners, that required little effort to prepare.
    *The soldiers' exposure to foods from other countries fueled the increase of ethnic foods although they were Americanized. This provided convenience but variety.

    *In the 1960s companies began introducing low calorie, low-sugar sodas. Coca-Cola introduced their diet soda and many other companies followed suit.
    *The microwave was used to cook foods fast and easy.
    *The genetic engineering of crops was created by Herbert Boyer and Stanley Cohen.

    GMOs and Energy Drink Craze

    *The Flavr Savr tomatoes becomes the first GE crop to win over USDA approval.
    *USDA approved the world's first insecticide producing crop as well as the first herbicide resistant crops were developed.
    *Energy drinks were introduced and very popular. Energy drinks are high in taurine, sugar, and caffeine.
