    A lot of European countries had a monarchy. Kings and Queens ruled countries like France, England, Russia. Queens and Kings owned their power from the gods. They felt like they were the chosen ones and if anyone questioned their authority was questioning god. This was called Devine Right of Kings. But, in 1215 efverything came to an end when a group of bristish men forced the king to give up his “divine right” and create a Parliment.

    King john was forced to sign the Magna Carta in 1215. The document had certain provisions to safeguard the rights of citizens. The things couldf n ot do were:

    from other lands
    • force widows to

    • Force knights to

    excuse them
    from guarding
    the castle!
    • Confiscate
    horses or carts
    • Force villagers to
    build bridges
    over rivers

    The American Revolution created the first democracy. Americans could vote, and the powers of the goverment got restricted. Not only one branch could have too much power. if however one brach tried, the other two could over ride it. However women could not vote until 1919. during the creation of its constitusion in 1787, the US created provisions for slaves. In order to count them for taxation, and voting it was deened that an African American was 3/5s of an white man, and could not vote.

    Rome was established in 509 BCE, they were declared a republic after the king got sent away. Rich families took over. The upper class people were called patricians. Even tho they numbered few, they ruled over common people or plebs. The plebs rebelled and won more rights. They may not have been as active as the Arthenians, they created a new democratic system called the senate. Even tho the partricians could only be senators, citizens had a a say in this republic.
